Chamber History

The history of the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce, since its original charter in 1940, is one of active participation and interest in the growth of our community.

While the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce received its Illinois Charter in 1940-41, the organized response of businesses to the welfare of the community can actually be traced back over 100 years.

Nearly 100 citizens gathered in 1908 to form the Civic Federation; its purpose being to “work for the greatest good for the greatest number of people in Crystal Lake.”

From the nucleus of that organization came the Crystal Lake Commercial Club in 1916. In 1922, the name was changed to the Crystal Lake Community Club.

Among the problems and solutions addressed by the businessmen through these organizations were paving programs in 1924, 1926 and 1928. Removal of the Chicago & Northwestern rail tracks along Dole Avenue were also accomplished during these years. The first zoning ordinance was passed with the club’s enthusiastic support in 1927.

Since the Chamber of Commerce in Crystal Lake was chartered in 1940, the members have continued working to improve the vitality and quality of life in the Crystal Lake area. The Chamber develops and provides information, education, and opportunities for communication to its members and also provides businesses, professionals, and community organizations from throughout the area with opportunities to meet, share interests, and develop business relationships.
